The James Hutton Institute is internationally recognised for research on plant sciences, crop protection, molecular biology, chemistry and agro-ecology.

It is Scotland's leading institute on plants and their interactions with the environment, particularly in developing sustainable agriculture to face challenges of food security, climate change, threatened biodiversity, EU pesticide withdrawals and healthy food.

The JHI was formed in 2011 from the merger of the Scottish Crop Research Institute with the Macaulay Land Use Research Institute.
